Dear Eileen,
I'm sorry I haven't written in a while and that I haven't really told you that much about what I'm doing. I'm not supposed to tell you, but you are my little sister after all and I think you have the right to know what I'm doing while I'm away. I just need you to promise you won't tell anyone, not even your friends. I'm working as a Censorette for the British Security Coordination(BSC) at the Hamilton Princess Hotel here in Bermuda. I translate and sort through all sorts of mail to see if there are any secret messages being passed between the enemies. You knew how much I wanted to help our country in the war but I didn't want to risk getting killed and leaving you all alone, so this is a really good way to do that. The other day my coworker and close friend, Nadya Gardner, was working on a specific letter signed by a "Joe K", a letter from the Joe K spy ring to the Nazis, and she thought of the most brilliant thing after the chemical tests came back negative. She though that the old-fashioned iodine reagent, which was used by the Germans during the First World War, should be tried. I completely agreed. Doesn't it make sense for the enemy to use an old technique that we wouldn't be expecting them to use again to throw us off and keep us from discovering them and their plans? I think so. Our work is really important even though you won't really see anything about it in the papers like you do about all the soldiers because our work is secret and it's really important that the enemies don't find out about us.
Don't worry that I'm just doing work and not having any fun though. I go swimming alot and when I have the time I go for walks, the views here are astounding. Speaking of fun and free time, have you made any friends? I don't want you to get lonely while I'm away. How's you're school work coming along? You're such a bright girl you'll probably be smarter than me within a year or two! College is actually pretty easy for me even with all the work I'm doing for the BSC, although at times it can be a bit stressful to have so much work on my plate at the same time. You've gotta be strong and pull through without me. You're a strong, smart young lady and I know you can manage without your big sister there. And even though I'm not there with you, I'll always love you. Hopefully I'll be able to come back in a few years.
~Love,
Pauline
